Allergen information: Full label details for this product are still being verified. If you have a food allergy or intolerance, please check the pack label on delivery or contact us before ordering, and we will confirm with the supplier.

Chilled items & warm-weather notice

We ship chilled (perishable) foods with ice-gel packs, kept refrigerated. In warm weather, light oil sweating on cured products such as sucuk/pastırma, or softening of cheese, is normal and not a sign of spoilage — it returns to normal once chilled. Please refrigerate items immediately on delivery and be available to receive your order on the delivery day.

Perishable foods are exempt from the 14-day change-of-mind return; your statutory rights for genuine quality or safety issues remain unaffected.

Description

Dark, smooth and gently chocolatey, carob molasses is one of the more unusual treasures of the Turkish pantry. This 380g jar from Koska is made from carob pods cooked down into a thick, glossy syrup, with a rich, slightly roasted flavour that works as well on breakfast bread as it does in baking.

From Pod to Jar

Carob trees grow along Turkey's Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, where their long brown pods ripen in the hot summer sun. The pods are naturally sweet and have been eaten for centuries, both fresh and dried. To make keçiboynuzu pekmezi, the pods are crushed and soaked in water to release their sugars, then the liquid is filtered and simmered slowly until it thickens into a dark, pourable molasses.

The Turkish name keçiboynuzu literally means goat's horn, a nod to the curved shape of the pods. In coastal villages, families traditionally made their own batches every year and kept them in the larder for the colder months.

What Does Carob Molasses Taste Like?

If you have never tried carob, think of a gentle cocoa flavour without the bitterness, layered with notes of caramel, dates and toasted malt. It is less fruity than grape or mulberry molasses and has a deeper, earthier character. Many people use it as a carob syrup in place of chocolate sauce or maple syrup, especially in recipes where they want a mellow sweetness.

Ways to Enjoy It

The Turkish Breakfast Way

Pour a few spoonfuls of tahini onto a small plate, add carob molasses on top and stir gently until marbled. Scoop it up with warm bread. This combination, known as tahinli pekmez, is a favourite winter breakfast and an easy afternoon snack. Some people add a sprinkle of crushed walnuts for extra crunch.

In the Kitchen

  • Drizzle over yoghurt, porridge or granola.
  • Stir into smoothies with banana and a pinch of cinnamon.
  • Use instead of golden syrup in flapjacks and energy balls.
  • Add to brownies or cakes for a deeper, chocolatey note.
  • Pour over pancakes or waffles at weekend breakfasts.
  • Mix into warm milk for a cosy evening drink.

A Trusted Name

Koska has been making traditional Turkish sweets for well over a century and is one of the most familiar names in Turkish kitchens, particularly for halva, tahini and molasses. Its products are known for consistent quality and authentic flavour, so this jar tastes just as many people remember from home. The 380g size is a good place to start if you are new to carob, or a handy everyday jar if you already love it.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and keep the lid tightly closed. There is no need to refrigerate. Over time, natural sugars may settle or crystallise slightly, which is normal. Stir well or warm the jar gently in hot water. Please check the label for full ingredient and allergen information.
