Chilled items & warm-weather notice

We ship chilled (perishable) foods with ice-gel packs, kept refrigerated. In warm weather, light oil sweating on cured products such as sucuk/pastırma, or softening of cheese, is normal and not a sign of spoilage — it returns to normal once chilled. Please refrigerate items immediately on delivery and be available to receive your order on the delivery day.

Perishable foods are exempt from the 14-day change-of-mind return; your statutory rights for genuine quality or safety issues remain unaffected.

Description

Van otlu peyniri, herb cheese from the Van region in eastern Turkey, is one of the country's best-known regional cheeses. Traditionally it is a salty white cheese mixed with wild mountain herbs, the best known being the garlic-scented sirmo, which give it a strong, savoury aroma. The word küp in the name refers to the traditional method of pressing the cheese into earthenware jars (küp) to mature, not to the shape of the pieces. Nefis Van Otlu Küp Peynir offers this style in a 250 g tub labelled 'Fromage – Cheese'. The milk type and herbs used are printed on the tub's label, so please read it for the exact ingredient list and allergens.

Serve it in small pieces at breakfast with fresh bread, tomatoes, cucumber and hot black tea, or alongside walnuts and olives on a mezze plate. It also works well in a toasted sandwich, folded into an omelette, or crumbled over a warm pide or gözleme. Van-style herb cheeses are usually intense and salty, so a small portion often goes a long way; if it is too salty for your taste, rinse the pieces briefly in cold water and pat them dry.

Keep the tub in the fridge with the lid closed and check the date printed on the pack. After opening, use the cheese promptly and always use clean utensils.
