Fresh Frost Ćevap Ćići, also labelled Polpette di Izmir and İzmir Köfte on the pack, is a bag of 24 frozen, finger-shaped meatballs weighing 800 g in total, so each piece is about 33 g on average. Ćevapi are a classic grilled minced-meat dish of the Balkans, and the pack gives İzmir köfte as the Turkish name. A halal logo is printed on the bag, and the serving picture shows the meatballs with grill marks in a dark pan.
Try them the Balkan way: grilled or pan-cooked and served in warm flatbread or lavash with chopped raw onion, tomato and a spoon of ajvar or yoghurt sauce, or alongside rice, fries and a fresh salad. For a Turkish-style İzmir köfte, the meatballs are usually baked in a tray with potato wedges, green peppers and tomato sauce, and these work well that way too. They also fit on a mixed grill platter when guests come over.
The pack tells you to keep it frozen and to cook the meatballs thoroughly, so cook them right through before serving. Keep the bag in the freezer until needed and do not refreeze once thawed.
