İrmik helvası is a warm, comforting Turkish dessert that traditionally needs a long, patient roasting of semolina in butter. This Dr. Oetker mix skips that step: the sachet already contains roasted wheat semolina and sugar, and the pack promises halva that is ready in about twenty minutes without any roasting. The front of the pack also states that pine nuts are included. It contains wheat, so it is not suitable for a gluten-free diet.
Bring 400 ml (two cups) of water or milk and 100 g of margarine to the boil in a pan, pour in the contents of the sachet and cook, stirring continuously. When it starts to bubble, lower the heat and cover the pan. Once the liquid has been fully absorbed, switch off the heat, turn the halva over a few times with a spoon and leave it to rest for 10 to 15 minutes. Serve it warm or fully cooled, sprinkled with cinnamon if you like.
In Turkey, semolina halva is traditionally cooked to share with family and neighbours, and it goes well with a glass of Turkish tea. Store the unopened 400 g pack in a cool, dry place.
