Peach compote is an easy, familiar sweet in Turkish homes: peaches kept in syrup, which works as a dessert, a spoonable snack or a cold fruit drink. This Bodrum version comes in a clear glass jar, and the neck label on the front reads GMO free, Vegan and Vegetarian, which is helpful when you are shopping for guests with different diets.
Chill the jar and serve the peaches in small bowls with some of the syrup. They also suit breakfast tables next to plain yoghurt or soft white cheese, and they top rice pudding, sponge cake, pancakes and ice cream well. Diluted with iced water, the syrup makes a gentle, summery fruit drink, in the same spirit as the hoşaf served on Ramadan tables.
Keep the unopened jar in a cool, dry cupboard and refrigerate it before serving. Once opened, store the remaining fruit covered in its syrup in the fridge and finish it within a few days, or follow the instructions on the jar.
