Description

Sour cherry, vişne in Turkish, is prized for its sharp and bright flavour, and it turns up in everything from sherbet to jam on Turkish tables. This Bodrum compote keeps dark red sour cherries in syrup in a glass jar with a red lid, and the neck label on the front states no added preservatives, colours or sweeteners.

Chill the jar well before opening. Spoon the cherries and some of their deep red syrup into small glasses or bowls and serve them as a light finish to a meal, or set them on the table next to rice dishes and savoury pastries, where their tartness balances the plate. They also make a quick topping for thick yoghurt, sütlaç, cheesecake, pancakes or vanilla ice cream. For a drink, pour the syrup over ice and top it up with chilled still or sparkling water.

Keep the unopened jar in a cool, dry place. After opening, store the cherries covered in their syrup in a closed container in the fridge and use them within a few days, or follow the storage instructions on the jar.
