Basmati is a slender, long-grain rice valued for its light, gentle fragrance. As it cooks, each grain grows mainly in length, so the finished rice is dry, separate and fluffy rather than sticky. This Bodrum pack holds 500 g, a practical amount for a couple of family meals, and Bodrum labels the rice as vegan and gluten free.
Basmati suits any dish where you want distinct grains: plain buttered pilaf, pilaf with toasted vermicelli, a bed for grilled meats, kebabs and chicken sauté, or a side for slow-cooked stews and vegetable dishes. It also takes well to spices such as cumin, cardamom or black pepper. For best results, rinse the rice in several changes of cold water until the water runs almost clear, then soak it for 20 to 30 minutes. Drain, add about one and a half cups of water for every cup of rice, bring to the boil, cover and cook on the lowest heat for 10 to 12 minutes. Leave it off the heat with a clean tea towel under the lid for 10 minutes, then fluff gently with a fork.
Keep the pack in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Once opened, close it tightly or tip the rice into an airtight container.
