Eker Ayran is the everyday Turkish yoghurt drink, sold in a 1 L bottle for the family table. Eker lists a short ingredient line: pasteurised and homogenised cow's milk, water, salt and ayran culture, with salt kept to a maximum of 0.8%. According to the manufacturer's nutrition table, 100 ml gives only 35 kcal, with 2.1 g of fat and 2 g of protein. As it is made from cow's milk, it contains milk.
Ayran is the drink Turkish people reach for with grilled kebabs, lahmacun, pide, börek, mantı and rice pilaf, because its cool, lightly salty tang refreshes the palate between rich or spicy bites. It is just as popular on hot days served ice-cold in a tall glass, or poured over a few cucumber slices with a little dried mint for a quick refreshing soup-like cooler.
Keep the bottle in the fridge, at 3 to 8 °C according to the retailer information for this product, and shake it well before pouring because the milk solids can settle. Drink it before the use-by date shown on the bottle.
