Duru Patlayan Mısır (Popcorn) is dried popping corn sold as whole kernels in a generous 1 kg bag. Pop them yourself and you get freshly made popcorn, with full control over the oil, salt and flavour.
The classic stovetop method works well: warm two tablespoons of oil in a deep pan with a lid, add a handful of kernels, cover and shake gently once the first ones pop. Take the pan off the heat when the popping slows to a few seconds between pops. Season with a pinch of salt for a simple cinema-style snack, drizzle with melted butter, or toss with sugar, cinnamon or chilli flakes. In Turkish homes popcorn is a favourite for film nights, children's gatherings and tea-time nibbles.
Store the bag tightly closed in a cool, dry place, and fold or clip it after each use so the kernels do not dry out. Check the label on the pack for storage and allergen details.
