Acı biber turşusu, pickled hot peppers, is one of the most familiar items on a Turkish table. These slim green peppers are packed whole in a clear brine inside a large 840 g glass jar with a red lid, and the label marks them as 'very hot', so they are meant for people who like real heat. The front label also carries vegan and gluten free badges.
In Turkish homes pickled peppers are served alongside almost everything that is rich or grilled: kebabs and köfte, döner wraps, lahmacun, beans with rice, lentil soup and a simple breakfast spread. Chop one finely into a salad or a yoghurt dip, add a few to a sandwich or toastie, or use them to lift a stew just before serving. Because the heat is considerable, take one pepper at a time and taste first; the brine itself is also popular as a splash in soups and marinades.
Store the unopened jar in a cool, dry place. Once opened, keep the peppers covered by their brine, reseal the lid and keep the jar in the fridge. Please check the label on your jar for the full ingredient list, nutrition values and best-before date.
