Carob, called keçiboynuzu (goat's horn) in Turkish, is the long, curved, dark brown pod of the carob tree. This pack holds whole dried pods in a resealable kraft pouch, labelled Natural Dried Whole Carob, Doğal Keçiboynuzu. The pods are mildly sweet on their own, with a chewy bite and a flavour that many people compare to chocolate. Unlike chocolate, carob naturally contains no caffeine or theobromine.
In Turkey, carob is chewed as a traditional sweet snack, ground into powder to use in place of cocoa in cakes and cookies, or boiled with water to make a dark, sweet drink and a thick molasses (pekmez). Break a pod into pieces and chew the flesh; the seeds inside are very hard, so take them out before eating or grinding. Soaking the pods and then simmering them gives a naturally sweet drink for a cold day.
Store the pouch in a cool, dry place and close it again after use, so the pods stay dry and do not soften.
