Kamelya is Çaykur's mild black tea, packed loose in a 500 g bag. The producer describes it as a breakfast companion with a soft taste that leaves a light impression on the palate, and as very suitable for blending, so it can also be mixed with a stronger tea to soften it. The pack is marked 'Black Tea' and the maker is Çay İşletmeleri Genel Müdürlüğü in Rize.
To brew it the Turkish way, fill the lower pot of a çaydanlık with water and bring it to a boil, put the tea into the upper pot, pour over some boiling water and let it steep on the lowest heat for around 15 minutes, then pour a little tea into a tulip glass and top up with hot water to your preferred strength. A lighter tea like this suits the morning table with olives, white cheese, tomatoes and simit.
Store the bag closed in a cool, dry place away from strong smells, since tea absorbs odours easily. Because the leaf is loose, a tin or airtight jar keeps it fresh for longer once the bag is open.
