Chilled items & warm-weather notice
We ship chilled (perishable) foods with ice-gel packs, kept refrigerated. In warm weather, light oil sweating on cured products such as sucuk/pastırma, or softening of cheese, is normal and not a sign of spoilage — it returns to normal once chilled. Please refrigerate items immediately on delivery and be available to receive your order on the delivery day.
Perishable foods are exempt from the 14-day change-of-mind return; your statutory rights for genuine quality or safety issues remain unaffected.
Description
The yellow and brown packaging is instantly recognisable to anyone who has spent time in a Turkish home. Mehmet Efendi Turkish coffee has been roasted and ground in Istanbul since 1871, and this 500g pack gives you plenty of that rich, velvety brew for daily cups and visiting guests alike.
A Name With History
The story began in Istanbul's old spice market district, where Mehmet Efendi took over his father's small shop and started selling coffee that was already roasted and ground, ready to brew. At the time, most people bought green beans and roasted them at home, so the idea was a real convenience. Over the following decades, Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi grew into one of the best-known Turkish coffee names in the world, and the queue outside the original shop is still a familiar sight today.
What Makes Turkish Coffee Different?
Turkish coffee is not filtered. Instead, it uses an extremely finely ground coffee, almost as soft as cocoa powder, which is simmered with water, and sugar if you like, in a small pot. The grounds settle at the bottom of the cup, leaving a thick, aromatic coffee with a layer of foam on top. The result is stronger and richer than a filter coffee, yet smoother than many espressos, with a full body and gentle bitterness.
Mehmet Efendi Turkish coffee uses a medium roast that brings out chocolatey, nutty notes without harsh bitterness, and the grind is consistent from pack to pack, which matters when you are aiming for that perfect foam.
How to Brew Mehmet Efendi Turkish Coffee
All you need is a cezve, the small long-handled pot used across Turkey, though a small milk pan will do in a pinch.
- Measure one coffee cup of cold water per person into the pot.
- Add one heaped teaspoon of coffee per cup, plus sugar to taste: none for sade, a little for orta, more for şekerli.
- Stir well, then place over a low heat. Do not stir again.
- Watch closely as it warms. When the foam begins to rise, just before it boils, remove from the heat.
- Spoon a little foam into each cup, then pour the coffee slowly so the foam stays on top.
Let it rest for a minute so the grounds settle, then serve with a glass of water and a piece of lokum or chocolate.
More Than a Drink
In Turkey, coffee is about hospitality. It is offered to guests, served after big family meals and even plays a role in traditional marriage proposals. Sharing a cup is an invitation to sit down and talk, and the custom of reading fortunes in the leftover grounds remains a fun ritual among friends.
Storage
Once opened, transfer the coffee to an airtight container or seal the pack tightly, and keep it in a cool, dry cupboard away from strong smells. Fresh coffee gives the best foam.
