Roasted corn kernels, known in Turkey as kavrulmuş mısır, are a familiar part of the nut-and-seed counter. This Original version from Bodrum is crunchy, golden and seasoned with salt. The label lists corn, vegetable fat (palm), salt, flavouring (monosodium glutamate), sugar and an antioxidant (butylated hydroxyanisole). Per 100 g it provides 430 kcal, 12 g fat (4.2 g saturates), 70 g carbohydrate, 6.5 g fibre, 8 g protein and 1.7 g salt, and the front of the pack shows 129 kcal for a 30 g portion. With 1.7 g salt per 100 g it is a salty snack, so a small bowl goes a long way.
Serve it next to tea or Turkish coffee, mix it with roasted chickpeas, nuts and dried fruit for a snack platter, or put it out for guests and film nights. The kernels are hard, so eat them slowly; the label warns that corn snacks may be a choking hazard and are not suitable for children under 3 years. It also states that the product may contain traces of milk, gluten, peanuts, nuts and sesame seeds, so check before serving anyone with an allergy.
Store the bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, move the snack to an airtight container and finish it within one week to keep it crunchy.
