Barbunya pilaki is a much-loved Turkish dish of red shelled beans simmered with carrot, potato and onion in a tomato sauce, usually served cool as a meze or warm as a light main course. Burcu's version comes ready to eat in a 400 g can with a pull ring. The maker's ingredient list reads dried red shelled beans, water, sunflower oil, potato, carrot, dried onion, tomato paste, salt, sugar, black pepper and garlic.
Serve it at room temperature or chilled as a meze with crusty bread, or warm it gently in a pan and enjoy it as a main course with rice pilaf, bulgur or a bowl of yoghurt. A squeeze of lemon, a sprinkle of chopped parsley and a few rings of raw onion are the usual finishing touches. Burcu's nutrition table gives 145 kcal, 7.0 g of fibre and 5.0 g of protein per 100 g.
Keep unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and do not buy cans that leak or bulge. After opening, the maker asks you to keep the contents closed in the refrigerator at +4 °C and to finish them within 2 days.
