Otlu peynir, literally herbed cheese, is one of the best-known breakfast cheeses of the Van region in eastern Türkiye, where it is traditionally made with wild mountain herbs. This Best Farm version is a white brined cheese made from pasteurised cow's milk and, according to the label, flavoured with wild garlic. The nutrition panel gives 245 kcal, 18 g fat and 15 g protein per 100 g, and the pack contains 200 g.
Herbed white cheese of this kind is salty and aromatic, and the wild garlic adds a green, savoury note that sets it apart from plain beyaz peynir. It is made for the kahvaltı table: cut into slices or cubes and served with tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, honey, butter and plenty of hot black tea. It also works in a toasted sandwich, crumbled into an omelette, folded into gözleme or pide, or scattered over a simple tomato salad with olive oil.
Because the cheese is brined (the label gives 2.5–3.0 g salt per 100 g), you can soak slices in cold water for a short while if you prefer a milder taste. Keep it refrigerated and eat it by the date on the pack; once opened, keep any leftover cheese covered. This product contains milk.
